Responsive Themes: Gridspace and Just Desserts
Posted by download in Software on 10-01-2013
This week, we’ve highlighted the responsive themes on WordPress.com. In our Theme Showcase, we have more than 50 responsive themes designed to provide a tailored layout depending on which device you’re using.
Today, two of our premium themes with responsive layouts are in the spotlight: Gridspace and Just Desserts.
Gridspace
Living in Saskatchewan, Canada, photographer Lyle Krahn is inspired by the wilderness around him. Exploring in his jeep and armed with a long lens, he spends hours looking for wildlife and capturing the perfect moment in nature. With Gridspace, Lyle showcases images on his front page in a clean and professional portfolio-style format.
Just like the other themes we’ve highlighted this week, Gridspace adapts to different screen sizes. This premium theme showcases vertical, horizontal, or square images. If you poke around on Lyle’s front page, you can toggle between two views — a list and a grid (as shown above) — by clicking the small square icons on the top right. Other customizable features include retro, dark, and light color styles; a custom header and background; four widget areas; and social icons. With Gridspace, your photography looks stellar on any screen.
As for other photographers using Gridspace, check out Phil Kneen. We dig his edgy portraits and moody landscapes, film shots, and iPhoneography. To sample his style, be sure to check out his “Old Leather Chair” series.
Just Desserts
“As you will see through projects that we share, the apple may not fall far from the tree, but it can certainly roll far off in its own direction.” That’s a line from the About page of craft blog Big A, Little A, created by a DIY mother-daughter duo (hence the cute, clever blog name). They have fun making and creating, from sweets to savories and knitted gifts to paper ornaments, and Just Desserts complements their work well.
A stylish premium theme originally launched for food bloggers, Just Desserts offers a clean layout to display both text and photographs — no matter your niche — and ensures your blog looks great no matter what device you’re using. You can also choose one of six designer-suggested accent and link color palettes (or select your own), two headline fonts (Josefin Slab and Bree Serif), different front page options to display your posts’ images, and other customizable features. As you can see on Big A, Little A, a custom header looks fantastic, too.
For another example of Just Desserts, take a peek at So Sew Lovely. Veanna, a London-based architect and hobby sewist, shares her garment making and draping projects and step-by-step tutorials. The posts on her home page, each accompanied by a trio of image thumbnails, showcase her most recent content in an engaging way.
Go Mobile
We’ve talked this week about themes that look their best on all screen sizes, including mobile devices. You can enable a mobile theme on your own site in your dashboard by going to Appearance » Mobile. Check “yes” next to “Enable mobile theme” and click “Update.”

Responsive Themes: Oxygen and Confit
Posted by download in Software on 09-01-2013
Yesterday, we highlighted two themes, Ever After and Sight. Today, we continue with our responsive theme showcase with two more beautiful themes designed to make sites look their best on any screen, from a desktop computer to devices like an iPad and iPhone.
Oxygen
BeatRoute Magazine, an arts and entertainment monthly in Calgary, Alberta, focuses on local and independent music. From features to album and show reviews, the site is chock-full of content, which is displayed effectively using Oxygen’s Showcase Page template. Musicians and bands are featured in sticky posts on a front page slider, as well as in smaller thumbnails. (You can also display posts in a traditional blog format, too.)
You can personalize Oxygen further with a custom background, header, and menus, as well as fonts and a custom link color. Even with all of these customized features, a site using Oxygen will look fantastic on screens of different sizes.
To see Oxygen in action on another site, visit the art and travel blog Satsumabug: Art & Life. Lisa Hsia brightens up her site with a colorful, whimsical custom header and a watercolor-inspired background to match.
Confit
At Scita > Scienda, Cathi-Lyn — a writer, music composer, and visual artist — muses on morality, spirituality, knowledge, and imagination in relation to everyday life, but also shares travel and photography. She uses the Confit theme, which was recently launched especially for restaurants and cafes.
But if you fancy Confit’s design, the theme works for a personal blog as well, as you can see with Cathi-Lyn’s site above. In addition to providing a responsive layout and looking fabulous on any device, Confit can be dressed up with a custom header, menu, and a gorgeous full-page background image (up to 1600px). We like the dreamy vintage map Cathi-Lyn uses, symbolic of wanderlust and big ideas. (We also like how Todd at Todd Pack’s Messy Desk takes advantage of the full-page background with a vintage typewriter image.)
If you like Confit, check out another blog, Studio Eats. From a “pocket-sized” kitchen in New York City, Jamie mixes recipes with posts on healthy living and workouts. Not only does Confit’s default background image look fresh and fitting on her pages, but Jamie’s custom font choices (Chunk and Ronnia Condensed) further personalize her site. (For more information on using custom fonts, check out our Custom Design upgrade.)
Go Mobile
We’ve just highlighted themes that look their best on all screen sizes, including mobile devices. You can enable a mobile theme on your own site in your dashboard by going to Appearance » Mobile. Check “yes” next to “Enable mobile theme” and click “Update.”

Pinterest Verification Added to Webmaster Tools
Posted by download in Software on 09-01-2013
Lots of you have been asking about website verification for Pinterest — the process that tells Pinterest that you own the website listed in your profile. Once your site is verified, your blog’s URL appears on your profile and in search results alongside the nifty little “Verified!” checkmark.
We’ve now added Pinterest to the list of webmaster tools we support. Verifying your blog with Pinterest is as easy as cutting and pasting a single line of code and hitting “save.”
(There I am, all verified. Don’t I look like a power user?)
If the idea of having to deal with code makes your nervous, don’t worry; our simple instructions tell you exactly what to put where. In less than a minute, you can have a checkmark of your very own, letting your followers know that you’re a trusted source of finding awesome stuff on the internet.
